They sent a delegation from Headquarters in Jerusalem to investigate what Jesus and his disciples were up to; after hearing of the miracles like the feeding of the 5,000. Jesus called them hypocrites; more concerned with external things. He taught his disciples that what comes out of the heart is what makes us unclean, not what goes into our mouths.
